The RT300-SLSA provides FES cycling for arms and legs. This is a very flexible device that is used by leading clinics across a wide range of patient indications. It enables leg and arm cycling from a wheelchair without the need to transfer, or it can be used from a chair, plinth or balance ball.
The patented Restorative Therapies smart control system – SAGE – provides the functionality to ensure shoulder stability whilst arm cycling. Shoulder muscle stimulation can be applied prior to movement to correct shoulder subluxation. Stimulation can be applied to improve posture while arm cycling including retracting and depressing the scapula.

- Upper extremity & shoulder – based on individual presentation for arm cycling you can select from: shoulder & scabula stabilisation, biceps, triceps, anterior deltoid, posterior deltoid, grasp or wrist extensors/release
- Lower extremity – based on individual presentation for leg cycling you can select from quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteals, gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior.
- Trunk – for core strength and stability you can also select abdominal and back muscle groups (e.g erector spinae)
All stimulation is appropriately coordinated during the leg or arm cycling motion based on muscle selection.

FES is a well-established rehabilitation technique that uses pulses of electrical current to stimulate peripheral nerves. FES is applied using adhesive pads placed over the muscle to be activated. When activated, it generates muscle contractions and patterned muscle activity.
With restorative therapies systems, FES creates patterned movement in the arms, legs and trunk. In people with weak or paralysed muscles, FES enables muscles to work and perform activities, even if the individual may not be able to consciously participate. Users can also stimulate core erector spinal muscles and abdominal muscles during the therapy session. This group of muscles are important for posture, balance, transferring, reaching and coughing.
When Karen was 19, she was shot in the back during an armed robbery, resulting in a T10 complete spinal cord injury.
Karen first discovered the RT300 at an ability expo which resulted in her getting one for her home. When Karen first tried it, she felt “Amazing!”

Karen uses her device three to four times a week, or as much as she can, which has resulted in a reduced amount of spasms and increased muscle definition. When she doesn’t use it regularly, Karen reports feeling weaker and weight gain.
In addition to standing, Karen says her device has kept her wound, fracture, and contraction free.
Based on her experience, Karen believes that the RT300 should be recommended to ALL patients that qualify for one.
“I hope physicians and therapists are being taught about how life changing this technology is for people with spinal cord injuries. It has saved my life by keeping me healthy and active for 31 years. I’m 50 years old and in great shape.”
Karen lives a very active lifestyle, enjoying sports such as adaptive rowing, water skiing, and snow skiing. She also likes going to the beach and concerts in her free time.
When asked about what’s next, Karen said, “I plan to write a book about my journey to becoming Ms. Wheelchair America 2019.”
