Lightweight wheelchairs UK — bespoke, active & made to measure
Choosing a lightweight wheelchair is one of the most significant decisions you’ll make. Not because it’s complicated – but because the right chair, set up correctly for your body and your life, genuinely transforms what’s possible. The wrong one, however well-intentioned, can hold you back in ways you might not even realise until you try something better.
At Cyclone Mobility, we’ve built our entire range around that understanding. Every chair we carry has been selected because it meets a real need – for active users who want to move freely, cover distance, travel, work, play sport, or simply get through a demanding day without their equipment becoming the story. We stock titanium wheelchairs, rigid aluminium wheelchairs, folding lightweight wheelchairs, and adjustable active wheelchairs, and every single one can be configured to your exact specification.

Titanium, aluminium or folding — what’s the difference?
The most common question we’re asked is which frame material is right. The answer depends on how you use your chair, how far you push, and what your priorities are.
Titanium wheelchairs – such as the Offcarr Heka – are the lightest option available, typically starting from around 4-5kg depending on specification. Titanium naturally absorbs road vibration, making it noticeably more comfortable over long distances or uneven surfaces. It’s also exceptionally durable – a well-maintained titanium frame will outlast almost any other material, which makes it a long-term investment rather than simply a premium purchase.
Aluminium wheelchairs offer outstanding stiffness and performance at a more accessible price point. Models like the GTM Jaguar and GTM Endeavour are made from aerospace-grade aviation aluminium – material engineered for strength-to-weight ratio – and deliver a precise, responsive push that active users depend on. For many people, an aluminium active wheelchair represents the ideal balance of performance, weight, and value.
Folding lightweight wheelchairs, such as the Offcarr EOS3 and Aria Plixa, add portability to the equation. If you travel regularly, commute by public transport, or need a chair that can be stowed quickly in a car boot or aircraft overhead locker, a folding frame changes what’s logistically possible. The EOS3 folds small enough to fit in an aeroplane overhead compartment — something very few wheelchairs can claim.
Bespoke and made to measure, as standard
Every chair in our range is built to your exact measurements. This isn’t a premium option or an upgrade – it’s how we work. Seat width, depth, back height, camber angle, footrest configuration, cushion specification: every dimension is set to fit you, not adjusted to approximate you. A wheelchair that fits correctly is measurably more efficient to push, better for your posture, and more comfortable over the course of a full day.
Our mobility advisers will take you through the full fitting process – and because every one of them is a wheelchair user themselves, they bring a level of practical knowledge that goes beyond specifications. They understand the difference between a chair that looks right on paper and one that genuinely works in daily life.
Funding your lightweight wheelchair
Lightweight and bespoke wheelchairs are VAT exempt for disabled users in the UK – you won’t pay the standard 20% on your purchase. Beyond that, the NHS Personal Wheelchair Budget scheme may allow you to top up your NHS provision to access a higher-specification chair. A range of charitable grants are also available through organisations including Aspire, the Spinal Injuries Association, Back Up Trust, and others. We have extensive experience helping clients navigate the funding landscape and can advise on what may be available to you.
Interest-free finance is also available, allowing you to spread the cost of your new wheelchair without paying more than the purchase price.
Free home demonstrations across the UK
We offer free home demonstrations for all of the wheelchairs in our range, anywhere in the UK. One of our advisers will come to you, bring the models most relevant to your needs, and give you the time and space to try them properly – in your home, on your terrain, in the conditions that actually matter to you. There’s no obligation and no sales pressure. The goal is simply to help you find the right chair.

Your frequently asked questions about lightweight wheelchairs
“What is the lightest wheelchair available in the UK?” The lightest wheelchairs available in the UK are titanium-framed active wheelchairs such as the Offcarr Heka, which can weigh as little as 4–5kg depending on specification. Ultra lightweight aluminium models such as the GTM Jaguar are also among the lightest available, typically starting from around 4kg. The exact weight of any bespoke wheelchair will depend on your individual specification, seat size, and chosen components
“What is the difference between a titanium and aluminium lightweight wheelchair?” Titanium wheelchairs are generally lighter and more durable than aluminium equivalents, with better resistance to fatigue and corrosion over time. They also absorb road vibration more effectively, making them more comfortable for active daily use. Aluminium wheelchairs offer excellent stiffness and performance at a lower price point, making them a popular choice for first-time active wheelchair users. Both materials can be made to an extremely high standard — the right choice depends on your lifestyle, budget, and long-term requirements.
“Can I get a lightweight wheelchair funded through the NHS?” Yes, in many cases. The NHS Personal Wheelchair Budget scheme allows eligible users to top up their NHS provision to access a higher-specification wheelchair, which can include active lightweight and bespoke models. Charitable grants from organisations such as Aspire, the Spinal Injuries Association, and others can also contribute to the cost. The Cyclone Mobility team has extensive experience helping clients navigate funding options and can advise on what may be available to you.
“Are bespoke wheelchairs VAT exempt in the UK?” Yes. Wheelchairs supplied to disabled people in the UK are zero-rated for VAT under HMRC guidelines, meaning you do not pay the standard 20% VAT on your purchase. This applies to bespoke and made-to-measure models as well as standard configurations. You will be asked to complete a simple VAT exemption declaration at the point of purchase confirming your eligibility.
“Do you offer home demonstrations for lightweight wheelchairs?” Yes. Cyclone Mobility offers free home demonstrations for lightweight wheelchairs across the UK. One of our mobility advisers — all of whom are wheelchair users themselves — will visit you at home to let you try different models in your own environment, assess your needs, and help you find the right chair. To arrange a free demo, contact us on 0800 180 4850 or fill in the enquiry form on this page.
“How long does a custom lightweight wheelchair take to deliver?”Lead times for bespoke, made-to-measure wheelchairs typically range from 6 to 14 weeks depending on the manufacturer and your chosen specification. Some models are available more quickly. We will give you a clear estimated lead time at the point of order and keep you updated throughout the process. Interest-free finance is available to help spread the cost while you wait.
